Installing a deck is one of the many ways you can expand your living space. Whatever its design, purpose and the type of material it is made of, you want to make sure it is as safe and secure as possible once everything is finished. Edward Klecka Construction Company, your trusted deck and roofing company, shares these important features your deck should have to ensure safety.
Railings are required for decks built at least 30 inches from the ground. They should be strong and stable enough to support 200 pounds of pressure or more on all sides. Support posts should be at least six feet apart, with balusters in between that are spaced no more than four inches apart to prevent pets and small children from squeezing through. The height of the railings should be at least 36 inches or three feet from the deck flooring, with handrails measuring no more than two and one-fourth inches in diameter for an easy grip.
Decks, much like residential roofing systems, require maintenance to ensure their longevity and performance. Wooden decks, in particular, must be thoroughly sealed or coated to keep the material from rotting or getting damaged because of moisture. The addition of sealant also plays a role in deck safety. Users who go barefoot while walking across the deck floor won’t have to worry about splinters.
While not required in most deck construction projects, flashings protect these structures during rainstorms. They move water onto the ground, keeping the deck’s wooden components from accumulating mold and causing health problems to people with respiratory issues.
